‘Stand up against Umno hegemony’

Majority of those who took part in a recent poll believe BN's Chinese-based parties must stand up against Umno to stay relevant.
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional’s Chinese-based parties must stand up against Umno hegemony to remain relevant, an FMT poll concluded today.
The poll, which ran for five days from Monday July 22, revealed a majority of readers believe Chinese-based parties like MCA, Gerakan and SUPP should stand up against their bigger counterpart to remain relevant in politics.
Out of 2,750 respondents, 1,093 (40%) of them believed that the minority parties have to stand up to Umno to regain confidence among the public following their dismal performance in the 13th General Election.
Suprisingly, 1,011 or 37% of readers think it is a good idea for the parties to join opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
Another 517 or 19% of respondents believe MCA, Gerakan and SUPP should leave BN and become independent parties.
Only a measly number of readers – 129 or 5% – are in support of the parties merging as a single entity and remaining in BN.
On Tuesday, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad reportedly said he is in favour of the proposed merger of three Chinese-dominant parties into a single entity.
Dr Mahathir said the move would help unite the leaders and members of the three parties which in turn would strengthen the BN coalition as a whole.
He said the merger would enable the three parties to speak as one voice and reduce overlapping of demands and interests among BN component parties.
