Police said a "thorough investigation" was underway and urged the public not to speculate.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A piece of raw meat believed to be pork was found at the doorsteps of a mosque in Machang Bubuk here this morning.
A 78-year old regular said he saw a pinkish-coloured meat at the entrance of the Cherok Tokun mosque when he arrived at 5.30am today to perform the Subuh (pre-dawn) prayer.
A police report has since been lodged at a nearby police station.
State CID Chief Mazlan Kesah when contacted confirmed the incident and said that the case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class
“The complainant was shocked to see a piece of raw meat which he had suspected to be pork. We have sent the piece of meat for laboratory tests to determine if it is really pork.
“From the looks of it, yes, it appears to be, so but we still need to confirm,” Mazlan said.
He said the police were “thoroughly investigating” the matter and urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
He aslso advised the public not to speculate on teh issue stessing that everything was “under control.
“This is a a very sensitive issue. Our responsibility is to ensure public order and safety and for now everything is under control and the situation here is calm but we will keep monitoring places of worship and increase patrolling around the area,” he said.
