EC frowns over provocation and kangkung

Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof has warned party supporters not to provoke each other with spiteful words or even the humble kangkung vegetable.

"If your party leader asks you to come support the candidate, behave well. Don't provoke the other groups by saying anything bad about others.

"Don't bring... I saw people bringing kangkungKangkung should be eaten, not carried from place to place. Then the other group will bring another things later," he told reporters today while surveying the ongoing Kajang by-election.

He also urged the supporters not to disturb voters, and for party leaders to keep their supporters in check.

"I expect the results to be announced at 9pm, but I urge everyone not to be emotional.

"This is a by-election, there is no need for a fight. I hope there will be no throwing of objects to the point where someone gets hurt," he said.

During polling, both Pakatan Rakyat and BN supporters tauntedeach other heavily as they make a last-minute attempt to sway voters, sometimes harassing voters outright. Racist campaign messages were also heard.

This is despite the fact that the campaign period has ended at midnight this morning.

Thus far, apart from ensuring that the opposing sides don't get too close, the authorities did little else to stop the obvious flouting of election rules and ensure voters could enter polling centres without harassment.
