PARLIAMENT Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Joseph Kurup yesterday dodged questions regarding his controversial remarks in which he asked Chinese voters in Kajang to vote for “one of their own”.
Despite being probed about the remark in Parliament by Ong Kian Ming (DAP-Serdang), Kurup said he did not want to “prolong” the issue.
“I have responded to this before and I do not wish to prolong this matter,” he told Parliament while wrapping up the royal address for his national unity portfolio yesterday.
BN’s Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin nevertheless leaped to Kurup’s defence, arguing that the statement was “up to perception of the people”.
While campaigning for BN in the Kajang by-election on March 16, Kurup told the mostly Chinese crowd to vote“one of their own”.
BN fielded a MCA candidate, Chew Mei Fun (left), in the March 23 by-election, which was won by PKR's Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Kurup’s statement sparked criticism from the opposition, who pointed out that the statement should not have come from someone who was handling the unity portfolio in the Prime Minister’s Department.
