Penang PAS said it is keen to find a solution to the dismissal of its Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) whip, Iszuree Ibrahim, from all council committees.
Its deputy commissioner, Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, said the issue needs to be settled because prolonging it would affect the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition.
It is understood that a meeting with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng by a delegation led by Mujahid yesterday resulted in a decision to approach Iszuree for a gesture of conciliation following his open criticism of the state government on September 19.
“We will negotiate with our colleague Iszuree Ibrahim for the next course of action,” Mujahid said in a statement today, without revealing details.
He said the state PAS is concerned and takes a serious view of the move by the Penang government to dismiss Iszuree from all council committees following his criticism.
Iszuree, who is the state PAS land bureau chief and the party’s state treasurer, was removed from the three committees he was in after he criticised the Penang government over local land and eviction problems at the PAS national assembly on September 19.
Mujahid said a meeting was held with Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, yesterday (October 2) to negotiate a way to settle the issue.
“We have taken appropriate steps to resolve the situation because we realise this move would affect the entire Pakatan Rakyat and a solution needs to be found,” he said.
He said Penang PAS commissioner Mohamad Sabu, who is currently hospitalised for dengue, had contacted Lim to explain Iszuree’s speech at the assembly.
It was also decided by the state PAS leadership that Iszuree should not issue any statements to the media while the leadership discussed the matter with the state government, to avoid any misunderstandings.
Iszuree is in Kelantan with PAS national land bureau chairman Mazlan Aliman where he met the party’s spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, and other senior PAS members there. He also attended a few talks there.
Iszuree had on September 19 spoken about eviction of traditional residents due to new development projects in the state. He said there was an impression spreading at the grassroots that Pakatan Rakyat leaders are now friendlier with developers than in listening to the voice of the people.
Iszuree later denied that he unduly attacked the state government at the muktamar. He said the content of his speech was based on a memorandum sent by the Penang PAS land bureau to Lim two months ago.
He had also suggested a new policy be devised by the PR government as a standard operating procedure on any development planning on land that involves local residents.
