38% of households have high speed broadband coverage

Phase 2 to ensure all state capitals and selected cities have 100Mbps.
High Speed BroadbandKUALA LUMPUR: High Speed Broadband (HSBB) coverage has reached 38% of households in economic zones throughout the country, especially in the Klang Valley, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said the government will widen the service through Phase 2 of the HSBB Project in all state capitals and selected cities so that they are able to receive speeds of up to 100megabits per second (Mbps).
“Broadband services have become the measurement of how developed or less developed a country, state, city or district is. According to the ministry’s broadband blueprint, the definition of high speed broadband is 10Mbps or more, anything lower is just broadband,” he said.
He said this when winding up a debate on the Supply Bill 2015 at the Dewan Negara sitting here today. The government is also committed to increasing the capacity of broadband service in suburbs through the Suburban Broadband (SUBB) project, he said.
Ahmad Shabery said the project will increase the capacity of broadband in selected suburbs with broadband speeds of up to 20Mbps. He added that the government has built 336 telecommunications towers nationwide and will build 1,000 more in the next three years.
