MIC president says the party will do away with leaders appointed from the top.
KUALA LUMPUR: Branch elections are to make a return to the MIC, doing away with leaders appointed from the top.
MIC president G Palanivel hopes to make amendments to the party constitution by June 2015 after which they will be put to a national conference.
“I am confident that the majority will support us, as the democratic move means the party can increase in strength,” he said, according to a press report.
He also plans to fold the Putera MIC and Puteri MIC into the party’s respective youth and women’s wings, in order to empower younger members and to give them a stronger voice.
Palanivel said he would also meet the leaders of other Indian-based parties, in response to a suggestion by Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak for a merger of these parties.
