Malware has a mechanism which will send text messages to recipients based on the information in their device and SIM card.
KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile phone users have been advised to be wary if they have received short messaging service (SMS) texts with the URL link PhotoViewer.apk software.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued an advisory that an SMS which posted a message “Is this your photo” should be deleted as the link provided by the SMS contained malware.
“When the URL is clicked, the software will be downloaded and a Photo Grid software will be installed.
“The application will try to reap as much money as possible from the number of clicks on advertisements which will also appear with the application,” MCMC said in a statement which was uploaded in Facebook yesterday.
Malware also has a dynamic mechanism which will send SMS text messages to a list of recipients based on the information in the device and SIM card.
“The SMS may be forwarded by the device of a known person which has been infected by the malware,” said MCMC.
