Jakim invites 25 Prominent Malays for DIALOGUE
PUTRAJAYA - The Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has invited members of the 25 former high-ranking civil servants for a dialogue on the status and practices of Islamic laws in the country.
Following their open letter to Prime Minister Najib Razak and the government to engage in an open dialogue on the laws and moderation, the department said it had contacted a representative from the group on the matter.
"The issues raised (by the group) touched on contentions relating to Islamic law practices in the country that was aired on the media recently,
"The department has contacted the party to hold a discussion and dialogue on the matter at hand," it said in a statement to the media today.
The meeting was scheduled to be held on Tuesday Dec 24 at the department's headquarters in Presint 2.
However, the department said the representative contacted had informed them that the group had yet to plan any attendance at the meeting.
The "liberal group", comprising retired top civil servants, including former ministry secretary-generals among the ranks, has been hot on the heels against right-wing groups such as Perkasa and Isma, labelling the two as extremists.
The 25 Eminent Malays are a group comprising prominent personalities who recently called for rational dialogue on numerous issues, including the position of Islam in a constitutional monarchy. - NST
