The government is prepared to give additional allocation to flood-hit states, either immediately or after the floodwaters recede, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said.
The allocation, he said, would be channeled through the various ministries involved, such as the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, Work Ministry and Defence Ministry.
"Each ministry will make their own assessment on whether or not an additional allocation is needed... they will later take it to the Finance Ministry for assistance," he told reporters after presenting relief supplies to 144 villagers from several villages in Ipoh that were affected by flash floods on December 8.
The affected villages were Kampung Seri Kelebang Tambahan Dua, Kampung Tersusun Klebang Selatan, Kelebang Bayu, Taman Bertuah and Kampung Tengku Hussein.
Husni said the assessment on infrastructure and public property damaged due to floods, including bridges, roads, schools and houses, however, could only be done after the situation returned to normal.
Prior to this, he said the Finance Ministry had approved an immediate allocation of RM50 million to help victims in states being ravaged by the worsening floods.
The floods, which hit Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Pahang, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Negri Sembilan and Selangor, had so far caused over 130,000 people to be evacuated to relief centres. – Bernama
