TOO LITTLE TOO LATE FOR MALAYSIA? Shutting out Islamic State's siren call

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE FOR M'SIA? Shutting out Islamic State's siren call
KUALA LUMPUR - THE threat posed by terror groups around the globe is real and getting closer to home, and the focus should be on formulating a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem.
Security and intelligence experts warned that posturing to gain personal or political mileage should not come into play.
Government officials and authorities said terror groups, such as the Islamic State (IS), existed and proliferated because they had mass appeal.
They said the lack of understanding of Islam by the groups’ sympathisers made it easy for the groups to peddle their warped interpretation of the religion.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said a twisted interpretation of jihad in Islam was one factor that caused scores of Malaysians to join the militant group.
“The ministry, police and religious bodies frequently assess the increasing radicalisation of the group’s supporters and why Malaysians are willing to leave the country to join them. The lack of understanding of Islam makes them easy targets for the militants,” Wan Junaidi told the Dewan Negara yesterday.
“They promise recruits an easy ticket to heaven and that their sins will be pardoned,” he said, in reply to a question by Senator Lim Nget Yoon, who wanted to know why Malaysians were willing to join IS.
“Recruits believe that these militants can establish an Islamic caliphate through their radical actions.”
He said hatred for Western countries also encouraged IS to oppose the superpowers, which were considered enemies of Islam.
“This group claimed that international Islamic organisations have failed to protect Muslim countries that are oppressed.”
Wan Junaidi urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities as terror groups, especially IS, used various platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, to generate interest and shift their recruitment efforts into high gear.
IS propaganda videos posted online often have high Hollywood-like production qualities to carry their message, spread their ideology and win support, especially from youth.
Bukit Aman’s counterterrorism division principal assistant director Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay said those working with militant groups would be arrested and charged under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).
“Individuals and organisations that argue that the arrests of these militants are a violation of their human rights need to understand that they (the militants) pose a serious and real threat to the country,” he told the New Straits Times.
Ayub said Sosma and the Internal Security Act (ISA) were not the same.
“There are non-governmental organisations who think that Sosma is the same as ISA.
“ISA allows for detention without trial. With Sosma, if the attorney-general is satisfied with the charges, they will be charged. If not, they will be released after 29 days.” - NST
