Umno Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan today wished all Christians a Merry Christmas on Twitter and in the process invited right-wing group, Isma, to join his upcoming party to learn about moderation.
Isma had earlier cautioned Muslims not to take part in such celebrations.
In a series of tweets, Rahman said the Islamic non-governmental organisation should understand that there was no place for "religious bigotry" in Malaysia.
"Not only I wish big Merry Xmas to all, I will host a bigger Christmas celebration this year in KB. ISMA is invited to learn abt moderation," tweeted the Kota Belud MP this morning.
"ISMA is not my voice. They don't represent me and many Muslim Malaysians. Religious bigotry has no place in moderate Malaysia.
"In Sabah, we are taught to be moderate & respect family members & friends who are non Muslim. ISMA will never understand this. So butt out!"
On Sunday, Isma said said Malays should not wish "Merry Christmas" to Christians nor celebrate with them, out of respect for Allah, Jesus and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
"It is an integral part of our faith to reject celebrations that have not been prescribed and/or that have a basis in falsehood, as inevitably they lead to misguidance and alterations in faith, as has happened in Christianity," Isma activist Abu Ameed said in a commentary.
But Rahman explained to Twitter user @Ahkee_ that he hosted big Christmas celebrations in his constituency every year as he was "a Member of Parliament to all, not just Muslims".
He added in another tweet, "Sometimes stupidity irks me!"
