Dyana stumped at mentality of Puteri Umno

Dyana Sofya says that the “distasteful comments” made about her photo shoot with Marie Claire is the reason violence against women must end.

PETALING JAYA: DAP member Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has taken to Twitter to voice her disappointment at remarks passed by Umno Puteri who called her photo shoot with Marie Claire magazine a “shameful act”.

“The distasteful comments against the photos are one of the exact reasons why we are fighting to end violence against women,” Dyana tweeted, adding that not even her elbows could be seen in the picture.

She was commenting on the remarks made by Puteri Umno’s information chief Haryaty Hamdzah, who was reported by Astro Awani as saying that young women should not pose “like that” to attract attention.

Clearly taking issue with the fact that the shoot was conducted in a bedroom setting, with Dyana pictured as if just woken from a long night’s sleep, Women’s Aid Organisation’s executive director Ivy Josiah shot back, tweeting: “Maybe Puteri Umno’s imagination is overactive.”

The shoot was part of a campaign called “Wake Up for A Good Cause”, which is aimed at raising funds for WAO. It was featured in the popular women’s magazine Marie Claire.

Also rushing to Dyana’s defence was magazine writer Audra Roslani, who tweeted: “something seriously messed up and perverted” if one sees a bed and the first thing that comes to mind is sex and not sleep.”

Saying Dyana had handled the backlash with “maturity”, Audra added: “do not equate a woman in bed with sex, clothed or unclothed. if you do, clearly you’re the problem.”

In the picture, Dyana is seen wearing a loose, white shirt as she stretches, looking into the camera with a big smile on her face.

With all the publicity the campaign is getting, heightened by the remarks by Umno Puteri, possibly raising funds for this noble cause will be even easier this time around.
