FROM MOST LIKELY TO LEAST LIKELY 'FUTURE PM': Wounded tiger, crouching Zahid

FROM MOST LIKELY TO LEAST LIKELY 'FUTURE PM': Wounded tiger, crouching Zahid
There is a wounded tiger roaming in Putrajaya.
Though not the brightest among the inhabitants of the jungle, it did what was required to stamp its mark. It severed alliances, turned its back on friends and switched camps. Then again, such is the nature of the beast.
It was a given a portfolio in line with its ferociousness and it struck fear in the hearts of those who dared to cross the line.
In Umno, many felt that the tiger could save the party from annihilation. The way the party hardliners see it, Umno is being nudged closer to the brink of extinction by pedigree pussycats. So no more pussycats, they say.
In the last party polls, the tiger triumphed. Its influence was undeniable as it sank its jaws on the biggest chunk of votes among those who vied for the three vice-president’s posts.
There is no turning back. The tiger has set its sights to be the king of jungle.
Then came a letter.
The document bore the tiger’s paw and suddenly its pride, reputation and ambition were left battered.
Now, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has become famous not for his poker face in politics, but for lending his support to a world renowned poker hand.
The tiger has suffered a debilitating blow.
Perhaps when a survey revealed that he trailed behind Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who managed to scrape through in the Umno vice-presidents race, and a political greenhorn in the form of Khairy Jamaluddin, this became too much to bear.
Feeling cornered, the tiger lashes out.
Expect bloodletting
Zahid claims to have in his possession similar letters that were penned by his predecessors, which include rival and former home minister Hishammuddin, and if exposed would cause them immense embarrassment.
Ditching his earlier assertions that such letters fall under the Official Secrets Act, Zahid now plans to expose them in Parliament.
Hishammuddin had previously denied issuing such letters.
So Zahid’s warning reaffirms widespread speculation that all is not well in Umno and the party is on course for bloodletting, which could see the bludgeoning of numerous political careers.
There was talk about how the letter is being used to cage the tiger and that certain quarters were delighted to see his image being torn to shreds.
What better weapon to use against a Muslim leader than suggesting a link between him and a gambling kingpin?
This prompted Zahid to lament about how he was a victim of perception and to declare that he had not profited from sin.
Now the question is whether the home minister would keep his word and disclose the letters of other ministers?
Perhaps, Zahid feels that if he is destined to sink because of the Paul Puah scandal, he might as well take others down with him. - M'kini
