It quoted a spokesman for Air Services Australia as saying the pilot of flight XAX223 did a turn-around as a safety measure.
The state-owned broadcaster quoted the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority as saying the plane's navigation system and map display were malfunctioning.
Flight XAX223 was reported to have turned back to Melbourne as the weather was more favourable than Sydney. It landed safely at 11am, Malaysian time.
This is the second emergency landing related to Asia’s largest low-cost carrier after Indonesia AirAsia flight 8501 crashed on December 28 last year.
Shortly after the crash, it was reported that AirAsia's flight AK6242 en route from Penang to Langkawi made an emergency landing, citing technical difficulties.
