Mahfuz, who was the chairman of the selection committee of the recently-concluded 61st PAS muktamar or annual congress, said he was instructed to approve the motion without debate after Hadi met with party leaders on the second day of the conference last week.
Those who attended the meeting were PAS spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din, newly elected deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, former deputy president Mohamad Sabu and secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali, the report said.
"Originally, the plan was to get the motion debated at the Ulama Council. But, on the second day of the muktamar, the president and spiritual leader, new deputy president, (former) deputy president and secretary-general decided to let the motion go through without debate."
“At the meeting, I mentioned the implications should the motion be debated or not.
But everyone there wanted the motion approved without debate, so I just followed the instruction,” Mahfuz told the Malay daily yesterday.
He added that despite Hadi's decision, the muktamar still has the power to reverse it if they wanted the motion to be debated.
"At the muktamar, the Shura council were also among the representatives. If they had wanted the motion to be debated, they could have done so because the muktamar has the power.”
The motion to cut ties with DAP was first passed by the party’s Ulama wing last Wednesday. It was in response to DAP’s decision in March to cut ties with Hadi and for opposing hudud under the Kelantan Shariah Enactment.
The motion was then adopted by the whole assembly without debate, a decision made by senior leaders that was heavily criticised by some of the delegates.
The motion is expected to be presented to the party’s Shura council and the central committee, which will make the final decision on the matter.
