Hospital sorry over 'wear towel' rule for woman

Sungai Buloh Hospital director Dr Khalid Ibrahim today apologised for an incident where a woman had to wrap a towel around her waist just to enter the building.

"“We apologise for the incident. It shouldn’t have happened. We do not bar any visitors from entering the hospital because of what they are wearing.

“However, we encourage the public to dress decently when visiting patients,” he was quoted as saying in a statement on Facebook.

He added the incident was due to a 'miscommunication' and a complaint had been lodged against the security guard who gave the instruction.

The towel incident comes in wake of two other similar incidents where women were made to cover up with a sarong before being allowed into a government building.

In the latest incident, the woman, who used the moniker 'Nisha Daddygal' on Facebook, claimed she had to wrap a towel around her waist after being denied entry into the Sungai Buloh hospital last Tuesday.

"The moment I reached the visitors gate, there were a few security guards who stopped me and said 'You can't go in because you're wearing shorts'. I had no choice.

"My father had to go up to the ward and borrow a patient's towel and brought it down to down for me to tie (around my waist) and cover my knees as requested by the security guards," she said in a posting.

Reporter denied entry

Nisha said only then was she allowed into the hospital to visit a patient.

"The security guards said this was an instruction from the Health Ministry," she said.

Nisha added that she was surprised by this and advised other women to take heed of the rule.

Yesterday, Klang MP Charles Santiago had criticised the Selangor state secretariat building's security officers fordenying entry to a woman reporter and another visitor.

Their knee-length dresses were considered too short and the guards purportedly offered them sarongs before granting them access.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has denied any such policy adding that the state government was looking into the matter.

On June 8, a woman complained that she was made to wear a sarong before being allowed into a Road Transport Department office.
