Lajim: EssCom hiding behind apple-polishers

Opposition leader says security command should answer criticism of its failings
Lajim-Ukin_esscom_sabah_600KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Opposition Leader Lajim Ukin said the Eastern Sabah Security Command should address its many failings which had been pointed out instead of seeking shelter behind certain parties who have come to its defence.
“It does not seem to be concerned, for one, over the fact that it’s ill-equipped and under-financed,” he said. “No amount of words can justify EssCom’s defenders attacking its critics.”
Lajim who is also head of Pakatan Rakyat Sabah and PKR Sabah, said it was the duty of the Opposition to bring matters to the Sabah government’s attention.”
Attacks in the media have been stepped-up recently against DAP Sabah and Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce president Lo Su Fui who led the way in putting EssCom under the public spotlight in the wake of two recent kidnappings in Sandakan.
The motives of those who defend EssCom, added Lajim, can be questioned. “If the kidnapping in Sandakan recently was an ‘inside job’ as claimed, then the security forces should flush out the illegal immigrants.”
“Instead, even more Pakistanis among others are flooding Sabah, overstaying their visa, and opening sundry shops everywhere.”
Meanwhile apple polishers had come to EssCom’s defence. “Sabah politicians should think twice before apple polishing. Some parties are so addicted to this culture that they do it (apple polishing) without thinking. It cannot always be my party, right or wrong.”
The issue of financial allocations to EssCom must be addressed so that the authority has sufficient assets to carry out its tasks in an efficient manner. “We understand that EssCom is yet to get the RM75 million budgeted for it last year and the RM660 million for this year. How can it carry out its responsibilities in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone if it has no assets? The enemy, within and without, know that and are sniggering at our security forces.”
He hoped that someone in authority, if not EssCom, can explain the figures so that calm would return to the public, especially in social media, about security in Sabah.
Lajim did not address allegations by his comrades in the Opposition that EssCom officers were playing golf during office hours and placing RM1,000 bets on each hole-in-one.
Among other allegations, EssCom officers on duty were noted for confining their operations to spas and massage parlours, and kicking down doors at business premises in the hunt for illegal immigrants. Lo has also complained among others that EssCom personnel were rude and unprofessional.
The Pakatan Pro Barisan has since lodged a police report against DAP Sabah on the allegations.
Two Orang Asal parties in the Barisan Nasional, Parti Bersatu Sabah and the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation, have also come to the defence of the EssCom against the stepped up attacks by DAP Sabah in the media.
