KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has to date, displayed names of 726 people convicted of corruption nationwide in its database.
Deputy chief commissioner (management and professionalism) Zakaria Jaafar said this was part of its relentless fight against corruption and to serve as a deterrent to others.
He said the public could access the database initiated in 2011, in the MACC website under ‘Name And Shame’, adding that for this year until May, almost 100 names had been entered.
He told the media this after declaring open the MACC’s new RM24.3 million office here today. Zakaria said the names would be displayed for three years before they were replaced with new entries.
Meanwhile, he said the MACC had set up 14 special corruption courts nationwide since February 2011, to expedite corruption case trials. “Not many countries in the world are doing this. We are proud of this because it gives us a positive image, as well as helps us gain public confidence.
“In 2009, we had only 39 per cent of public confidence and this gradually improved over the years to 68 per cent last year.
This year, our target is 70 per cent,” he said. Zakaria hoped the public and the media would continue to give the MACC their fullest support in fighting corruption in the country.
