No political hand behind RM1 million reward to expose Dr M’s wealth, says group

A civil society group, which grabbed headlines recently with a RM1 million reward offer to anyone willing to expose former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's hidden wealth, denies any political influence or sponsorship in its set-up.
The newly formed Citizens for Accountable Governance Malaysia (CAGM) said it wanted to put a stop to the systemic corruption that has plagued the government for a long time.
Its patron, Md Zainal Abidin, said its members were not politicians and came from diverse backgrounds who have contributed funds and information towards its cause.
Many of the group’s critics have questioned how the NGO, formed only in April, could come up with such a large fund to reward whistle-blowers.
Zainal said the group has almost 2,000 members who have each contributed RM500 to RM1,000 to the cause.
"The main committee comprises 30 people, and we have about 2,200 members nationwide. We have decided that each contributes RM500 and some have given RM1,000.
"These contributions are being used as funds and so far, we have RM1 million to reward whistle-blowers.”
Zainal said CAGM had a lot of information on how systemic corruption had been taking place in the government administration, from the time of Dr Mahathir to that of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"We get information from those who have conducted businesses during Dr Mahathir's time, and Pak Lah (Tun Abdullah Badawi).
"They are individuals who are involved in government-owned and government-linked companies, who have come forward with information on how systemic corruption occurs," he told The Malaysian Insider.
Last week, CAGM said it was prepared to offer RM1 million to anyone who could expose information on Dr Mahathir's wealth and assets.
However, critics have questioned the timing of the offer, saying that it came as the retired statesman has upped his attacks against Najib and called for his resignation over a myriad of issues.
"We put up the offer because it is a big issue, billions have been wasted and lost but we don't know where and how," Zainal said, in defence of the reward offer.
In fact, he said, the roots of financial controversies, such as those involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), had already begun during Dr Mahathir's tenure as prime minister.
"The problem in our system stems from Dr Mahathir and he, in fact, has a connection with 1MDB. In our latest statement, we stress on the fact that Dr Mahathir is behind Kuasa Nusa Jaya, a subsidiary of Tan Chong, buying a power plant from Egypt.
"These problems began with IPP (independent power producers) players and crony companies. Najib has his own way of doing things and so did Dr Mahathir," he said.
Zainal insisted that the group was not picking only on Dr Mahathir, and revealed that its next target would be Najib, adding that there might be other rewards in the works to expose the prime minister.
"Najib is our next target."
Zainal also said that he had led a Perak-based NGO that was known as the Coalition Concerned Citizens of Perak around 2012.
According to him, CAGM does not have any notable leader now, as is it not sponsored by one individual. He said members of the group operated collectively.
Zainal, however, said that he was not ready to reveal anything about CAGM openly, adding that their intention was not to seek publicity.
"We were not set up to seek publicity like other NGOs."
At the moment, Zainal said the group was in the midst of completing the draft of their organisation's constitution to be submitted to the Registrar of Societies.
CAGM sparked controversy recently not only for offering the huge sum to anyone who could provide evidence of Dr Mahathir's wealth but also for threatening to sue the former prime minister for losses incurred during his tenure.
Critics of Dr Mahathir's administration have estimated that close to RM100 billion was lost through financial scandals during his 22 years as prime minister.
