Palanivel: Najib gave go-ahead for elections

After being ticked off, MIC leader says BN chairman had given the blessings to ignore Registrar

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president G Palanivel has said Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak had given his blessings last week to Palanivel’s plans to hold elections for MIC branches.
He said today that it was his right as party president to conduct the elections. Yesterday, he had announced that MIC branches would hold elections from August and that elections for other positions would be completed by year-end.
“I had a meeting with (Najib) on Friday. I told him that I am the president and he told me to hold the elections,” said Palanivel, quoted by Star Online.
(However, Palanivel’s remarks could not immediately be confirmed with the Barisan Nasional chairman.)
Palanivel brushed off a question about whether he was implying that Najib recognised him as the rightful president, in the face of his challenger, deputy president Dr S Subramaniam, having declared himself as acting president.
Subramaniam is scheduled to hold a rival “special assembly” at Putra World Trade Centre today. He has also called for branch elections to be held next week.
Palanivel reportedly said: “Don’t worry about that, he (Najib) just asked me to go ahead with the elections. He also told me not to worry about the Registrar of Societies (RoS) directive or the 2009 CWC members.”
The Registrar had ordered that fresh party elections be conducted by members of the 2008 central working committee.
The MIC president brushed off his deputy’s challenge by saying “Subra has no authority. They are all suspended anyway. However, we might forgive them in future,” quoted by Star Online.
Earlier in the week Palanivel had suspended Subramaniam’s party membership, and that of 13 Subramaniam supporters. In return Subramaniam had declared that Palanivel was no longer party leader, going by an order from the Registrar of Societies, and declared himself acting president.
The Registrar has declared the 2013 party elections null and void and ordered fresh elections for all positions. In 2013, Palanivel and Subramaniam had been returned unopposed as president and deputy president respectively.
Palanivel said the elections in August would be conducted by an independent committee of lawyers and auditors, not all of whom were MIC members, but plans for the elections would depend on the outcome of a court case against the Registrar.
He has filed an appeal against a court decision last week that rejected a challenge he had filed against the Registrar’s orders.
