Ranau earthquake: Two climbers still missing

Rescue teams today continued in their efforts to search for victims reported missing on Mount Kinabalu following the earthquake which struck Ranau, Sabah, last Friday.

Both victims are Singaporeans - a teacher and a student.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Masidi Manjun said the two were still listed as missing as they could not make positive identification of the victims due to the state of the remains.

The search and rescue (SAR) teams found five more bodies on the mountain yesterday, bringing the total number of casualties to 18. Of the 16 confirmed dead, six are Malaysians, Singaporeans (seven), Philippines (one), China (one) and Japan (one).

However, police have not released the identities of the other bodies found, except for the bodies of local mountain guide Robbi Sapinggi, 30, and a Singaporean student brought down on the first day of the incident.

The SAR operation today will be scaled down, but will continue until all the victims are found following the strongest earthquake ever experienced in Malaysia.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is on a working visit to Saudi Arabia, is also monitoring developments in the aftermath of the quake.

Muhyiddin monitoring situation

Najib, in his latest update on Facebook, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, as chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee was now in Sabah to monitor the situation and manage relief operations in the state.

He also said the federal and state governments would monitor, prepare reports and take immediate action to ensure that infrastructure damage caused by the earthquake were repaired immediately.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin announced compassionate aid of RM10,000 for the families of those killed when he visited two schools in Ranau today.

The RM10,000 is shared equally by the federal and state governments and is only meant for the families of victims who are Malaysians.

Meanwhile, Najib told Malaysian journalists in Jeddah that he had sent a condolence message to his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong over the loss of life of Singaporean citizens in the disaster.

In Singapore,  Lee Hsien Loong declared today a day of national mourning for the Singaporean victims.

The Sabah government did likewise for victims who are Sabahans.

The tremors caused by the earthquake were also felt in areas such as Tambunan, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud.
