REVENGE BY UMNO 'GANGSTERS'? 3 Penang DAP offices vamdalized in 2 days
Another DAP office in George Town was vandalised today, this time it was the service centre of state party chief Chow Kon Yeow.
The damage to the premises on Jalan Kedah was not serious, with just the bottom left corner of the shutters torched.
This is the third incident after DAP's Komtar rep Teh Lai Heng's service centre on Jalan Talipon and the state DAP headquarters on Jalan Rangoon were splashed with black paint over the last 24 hours.
Chow said the incident at his service centre took place at about 3am, based on a closed circuit television (CCTV) recording.
The CCTV footage, he said, showed a man arriving at the premises and setting a cloth on fire at the entrance before fleeing the scene.
The Padang Kota assemblyman described the incident as an attempted arson.
He also said he had strong reason to believe it was an act of retaliation by certain quarters over a recent enforcement action by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
It was reported last Friday that MBPP tried to remove a red signage bearing the word "Umno" from the entrance of the Umno building on Jalan Macalister.
The erection of the signage was said to be occupying part of a nearby water pipe reserve.
The enforcement action reportedly angered the party, with state chief Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman reportedly saying that no prior notice was sent by the council and alleged that the episode was an attempt by the DAP-led state to attack Umno.
He said they would keep the signage where it is and submit the necessary applications for it.
Chow, who is the local government exco in charge of the local councils, said the law applies to everyone and the local council's job was to make sure everyone followed the rules and regulations of the local authorities.
"Umno does not enjoy immunity (from the law). It is also not true that the council did not send them prior notice.
"We hope these acts can be stopped and we hope CCTV footage can help the police in their investigations," he told reporters this morning.
It is understood that a police report on the latest incident was being made.
Yesterday, northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the police were probing the incident at Teh's service centre under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing damage to the amount of RM25 and above.
Mior confirmed a police report on the incident had been made at about 12.50pm today by one of Chow's officers.

He said the complainant, Chee Chong Chew, 55, was informed of the incident by the chairman of the Jalan Kedah village development and security committee at 9.30am.
"He went to the service centre and saw the burned marks. He then checked the CCTV recording, which showed a man burning something at the entrance at 3.04am.
"The footage was unclear so he could not see what the perpetrator looked like."
Mior said the police was informed that there were no damages incurred because the burned marks on the shutters could be washed off and the DAP banner on the shutters that was also partially torched was an old one.
The case, he said, is being probed under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage to amount of RM50.
The offence carries a jail term that may extend to seven years, a fine or both. – TMI
