Since the spat between crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and a minister erupted, there have been a raft of social media postings whipping up Johor nationalism.

The latest is a posting on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page, which provided readers with a brief history lesson on the state.

"The origins of the word Johor is derived from the Arabic word 'Jauhar' meaning 'precious jewel'. Johor was also known as 'the end of land' or 'Gangganu' by the Siamese, which means ‘precious stone’.

"The history of modern Johor began under the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar. Sultan Abu Bakar introduced the Johor constitution which subsequently brought changes in the Johor administration and it became more efficient," states the bilingual post.

The post said transferring the government's administration from Teluk Belanga to Tanjung Puteri in 1841 gave positive impact to Johor, especially, in terms of development.

"The construction of government buildings, police stations, mosques, court and the grand palace clearly proved that Sultan Abu Bakar deserved to be called the 'Father of Development of Johor'.

"Today, Johor, which is bordered by Malacca, Pahang and Singapore, is one of the fast developing and advanced States in Malaysia," it added.

The post, which included the tag 'Hidup Johor Demi Johor' also featured a photograph of the late Sultan Abu Bakar, reigning Sultan Ibrahim Ismail and crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Johor Southern Tigers refers to the state's football team. Tunku Ismail is the president of the Johor Football Association and often posts his views on this Facebook page.

The prince’s post which mocked Prime Minister Najib for not turning up at the Nothing to Hide dialogue session started the ball rolling.

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz then warned the prince not to meddle in politics or risk being "whacked".

This led to the minister drawing flak from various quarters, but he has refused to back down. The issue also gave rise to talk of secession by Johor.

Nazri is also being investigated by the police after a slew of reports were lodged against him.
