Former PAS national unity bureau chief Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa has expressed scepticism about the party's plan to field non-Muslim candidates against DAP in the next general election, saying the non-Muslim PAS supporters' wing was no longer sure of its position in the Islamist party following the cutting of ties with DAP and the collapse of Pakatan Rakyat.
"Who are these candidates? As far as I know, even the PAS Supporters Congress is unsure of whether its existence in the party is guaranteed.
"The congress is now thinking about its position in the party," Mujahid told The Malaysian Insider.
He said PAS would empower its non-Muslim PAS supporters’ wing and more non-Muslim candidates would be fielded by PAS in elections.
Mujahid said the existence of the PAS Supporters Congress itself was due to the efforts of the progressive leaders, who brought the wing into the party structure.
"The progressive leaders of the party were the ones who encouraged and pushed for interactions between the different communities. Now that we are out, who is doing that work?
"This is why the supporters' wing is feeling insecure about its position," said Mujahid, who was instrumental in the setting up of the wing when he was in charge of the national unity bureau.
Leaders from the progressive faction who were ousted in PAS's recent elections – including Mujahid, former deputy president Mohamad Sabu, former vice-president Salahuddin Ayub, MPs Hanipa Maidin and Khalid Samad, and former committee member Dzulkefly Ahmad – have formed the New Hope Movement.
The movement, which was launched in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, is helmed by pro-tem chairman Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, together with the other ousted leaders from PAS.
The movement, which is growing with the support and interest of activists and groups, is seen as a precursor to a new Islamist party that will serve as an alternative to PAS.
Mujahid said the PAS supporters wing at various levels in several states have voiced their interest in the new movement.
"Today we have the Tasek Gelugor PAS supporters' wing here with us. They want to know more about what we are about," he said after announcing the movement's Penang pro-tem committee he is heading in Butterworth yesterday.
"We can share with them what our movement's aspirations are. The final decision (on whether to support the movement) is up to them," he said.
