Quit if you’re chicken, Umno man tells leaders

Syed Ali of Cheras ticks off those who won't speak up against wrongdoing.

PETALING JAYA: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has chastised Umno leaders who are silent in the face of wrongdoing committed in their midst.
“Leaders who are too cowardly to speak up should step down,” he said in his speech to delegates at Cheras Umno’s annual meeting last night. It was at the same meeting that Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin made remarks that were startlingly critical of Prime Minister Najib Razak, obliquely blaming him for much of the bad press on 1MDB.
Syed Ali said Umno leaders must exhibit courage in correcting their colleagues who have done wrong “no matter how bitter it may be”.
He said their cowardice was a manifestation of their self-interest. He did not mention names.
Syed Ali also lambasted Umno mouthpiece TV3 for giving airtime to critics of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.
“TV3 has purposefully invited a number of people, including opposition figures, to attack the former prime minister, who served us for 22 years,” he said.
“Worse, TV3 itself has attacked Mahathir, a former great leader of Umno.”
He said it was especially unacceptable for Umno members and leaders to attack Mahathir, but “it would be acceptable for the former premier to criticise Umno members.”
“He is like a father to us,” he said. “He can criticise and even scold us, but we can’t do the same to him.”
Syed Ali denied that he had reneged on his promise to give up his position as head of the Cheras Umno division. He said he had no choice but to accept his re-election “because that’s what the delegates want”.
He promised to shoulder the responsibility as best as he could.
