KUALA LUMPUR: Anti-corruption investigators have been urged to check all the details of a Wall Street Journal report of US$700 million being deposited in bank accounts purportedly belonging to the prime minister.
Umno’s Reezal Merican Naina Merican, MP for Kepala Batas, said the special task force led by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission must investigate all the allegations, acting in the national interest and never submitting to pressure from anyone or the media.
Reezal said the silence of Bank Negara and AmBank in the face of the WSJ report had created a “vacuum”. Investigators must focus on determining the veracity of the information published by the Journal, he said, and not on who was behind the claims made in the report.
On Thursday the Journal reported that funds linked to the government investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd had been deposited in two bank accounts with AmBank’s private banking unit, which deals with accounts of individuals with high net worth.
Five deposits were made, the first of US$620 million before the general election of 2013, and others between March 2013 and February 2015.
The two accounts, whose numbers were published by the Journal, were said to be in the name of “Dato Sri Mohd Najib bin Hj Abdul Razak”.
Reezal, who a member of parliament’s watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee, called for speedy action. “What is more important is that our ground must be cleared of all these allegations. Such accusations have an impact on the trajectory of the people’s support for the government and party. So, it must be resolved quickly,” he said, according to Malaysian Insider.
On Friday Najib accused former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad of being behind the reports being published at Sarawak Report and the Journal. He said the attacks began when he refused Dr Mahathir’s personal demands and that Mahathir was “working hand in glove with foreign nationals” to discredit him.
The dubious financial transactions of, and investments made by, 1MDB have been the subject of constant criticism from Dr Mahathir, who has openly asked that Najib step down as Umno president and prime minister.
