SINGAPORE: News of the AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 crashing last year on December 28 reduced him to tears, Tony Fernandes revealed for the first time ever in an interview yesterday over 938LIVE.
“I cried alone. I’ve never said that. I think when you’re with your people, you need to be as strong as possible,” the AirAsia Group CEO was quoted as saying by Channel News Asia about his wanting to stay strong for the sake of his staff who were also reeling from the tragedy.
During the interview he spoke about how there were no words to describe how he felt about the crash.
“The first step was, ‘Do I turn up or do I not go?’, and the first decision was ‘No, you shouldn’t go. This is the Indonesian airline.’
“But the airline is so closely linked with me, it would have been wrong not to have gone and my staff needed me, my people needed me and most importantly, it had to be seen by the relatives that the very top was there,” he said.
He described the pain of accompanying some of the bodies back to the respective families and acknowledged that no matter how crushed he was by the shocking crash, he understood that his pain did not compare with what the victims’ families were experiencing.
“When you take a young woman back to her home to bury her, when you meet the families of our pilots, and whole families were wiped out… But whatever remorse you do feel, you can’t feel what they went through, so that’s very emotional.”
All 162 people on board the flight died in the disaster as they travelled from Surabaya to Singapore.
Tony said that while he took pains to play the part of a leader as best as he could, the loss of so many innocent lives that fateful day has had a deeply personal impact on him.
