Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today warned politicians against using the race card to promote their own agenda, saying it will only create anxiety among Malaysians.
Speaking to his constituents in Pagoh, Johor, the Umno deputy president said such politicians were simply trying to become heroes in their own community.
“They are raising such sentiments even though this would only cause the people to feel unsafe in their own country,” said Muhyiddin at the Pagoh Umno's "Jasamu Dikenang" event in Gersik.
His remarks come two days after the "red shirt" rally on Wednesday which saw fiery speeches made against the Chinese community.
The former deputy prime minister said Malaysians have maintained good relationship among the different races in the country but it was being challenged by narrow-minded politicians.
He warned that racial harmony in Malaysia should not be treated lightly as it could lead to mistrust among the people.
“It is the responsibility of the country’s leadership to give emphasis on this issue, considering that the country is now facing a lot of problems.

"How are we going to resolve these problems if we fight each other?” said Muhyiddin.
