KUALA LUMPUR: An Indian national was charged today at the Magistrate Court for slapping an imam during Friday’s prayers and overstaying in the country.
Shabir Ahmad Khan faced charges under Sections 323 and 296 of the Penal Code for causing hurt to Imam Mohd Zuhairee Mohd Yatim and disturbing a religious assembly respectively, as well as Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959 for overstaying.
According to the charge sheets, he was said to have committed the offences at the National Mosque here.
He pleaded guilty to the three charges.
Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamardin ordered Shabir to undergo psychiatric evaluation in Hospital Bahagia, Perak and set the next mention date on November 30.
ASP Nom Phot Prackdit appeared for the prosecution.
On September 18, Dang Wangi police arrested a foreigner who slapped an imam during Friday’s prayers.
According to Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainol Samah, the foreigner tried to grab the imam’s microphone while the latter was conducting prayers and proceeded to slap him on the right cheek.
The video of the incident was widely circulated on social media.
