The spotlight is on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as he makes a surprise visit to the Umno Youth assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre today. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, December 9, 2015.Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin caused a stir at the Umno Youth assembly when he arrived for a surprise visit.
Shouts of “Long live Tan Sri” echoed outside Dewan Tun Dr Ismail when Muhyiddin, who is estranged from Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, arrived at 3pm.
He was quickly ushered into the hall while being mobbed by a scrum of reporters, cameramen and Umno Youth members.
Muhyiddin’s role this year as the party’s number two has been curtailed by the party’s Supreme Council which decided to stop the tradition of having the deputy president officiate the assemblies of the party's Youth, Wanita and Puteri Wings.
Instead, the wing chiefs launched their respective meetings.
In effect, Muhyiddin is barred from speaking to Umno members on an official platform, which prompted him to speak at a special gathering at the Kelab Sultan Suleiman in Kampung Baru on Monday where he made his strongest attack on the Umno leadership.
Muhyiddin, who was dropped as deputy prime minister after openly questioning Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak about alleged financial scandals, has said he will still attend the assembly, which begins tomorrow.
