Single mum loses RM182,000 EPF savings to cyber lover

Deceived by sweet words and promises of a man, whom she had only met on a social networking site, a saleswoman at a supermarket lost more than RM182,000.
Ang Siew Mah, 57, a single mother with two children said she befriended the man known as Ma Tian Xiang, in his 40s from Hong Kong through Facebook last March.
"His loving and caring attitude has made me fall in love and put full trust in him. He also promised he would come to this country on May 5 to meet me and promised that he would marry me and take me to live in his country," she told a press conference in Butterworth today.
Ang said the man had also asked her to invest in the foreign currency exchange trading, Forex and shared some success stories of those involved in the business. Out of love, Ang had also withdrawn all of her Employees Provident Fund savings that she had saved for over 20 years.
Ang deposited the money via online transfer into the man's bank account in stages namely RM49,968 on March 28, RM39,680 on April 14, RM12,500 on April 20, RM30,000 on April 21 and RM50,000 on Wednesday.

Ang, who has been a single mother for the past 25 years, said she became aware of being deceived on Friday after finding out that the man's Facebook account was no longer active, besides being unable to contact him by phone.
Blinded by love, Ang also quit her job at the supermarket in Perai on the advice of the man. Ang lodged a police report at the Bukit Mertajam police station near Butterworth today to avoid members of the public particularly women out there from being deceived by the man.
Seberang Perai Tengah police deputy chief Supt Mohd Sabri Mohamad, when contacted, confirmed receiving a report from Ang and said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
