PAS wants other opposition parties to stay out of the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections where the Election Commission is expected to announce the nomination and polling days tomorrow.
Its deputy president, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said PAS would fight tooth and nail against Umno and BN in the two by-elections, as the two areas are traditional PAS seats.
He added that the Islamist party would continue with the tradition of putting up its candidates there for the two Parliament seats.
“The focus of the opposition bloc is to see BN falter. If this is the purpose for participating in the by-elections, then all parties must work to see that BN is defeated.
“With this, any action by any opposition party to put its candidates would mean giving BN the assistance to win.
“The Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections are not venues (for opposition parties) to show who is great unless they intend to,” he said.
Former PAS member of Parliament, who is now Amanah Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad had told Malaysiakini that there is a possibility of a three-way fight, where there is a chance for Pakatan Harapan to put in a candidate, either from PKR, DAP or his own party Amanah.
Amanah will hold its meeting on Sunday to decide whether it would contest there.
Tuan Ibrahim reiterated that PAS is committed to opposing BN in Sarawak, adding that the two by-elections were ample evidence that the allegation of PAS trying to unify with Umno-BN was a slander.
“The slander is believed to have been spread to cause disunity in PAS and allow the formation of a new party,” he alleged.
The PAS deputy president hopes that no opposition party would place its candidate in the two by-elections, just to test its support, as such action would only give BN the opportunity to win.
He also raised a poser for the opposition bloc:
Are the opposition (parties) keen to see the people absorb statements such as “GST is accepted by the people”, “The people believe there is no misconduct by the PM in the RM2.6 billion donation”, “BN cares for the rakyat”, “The people believe PM is not involved in 1MDB, “BN is a clean government” and other sentences used by BN to win the election as what happened in Sarawak?
Tuan Ibrahim said the opposition bloc has to realise that a contest with other opposition parties against the BN would only be a futile effort, which may lead to a BN victory. -Mkini
