Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief Hasan Arifin made more than RM321,000 in profit after purchasing land at far below market value, PKR claimed today.
PKR Youth information chief Lee Chean Chung alleged that it all started in 1997, when the Pahang state government approved the sale of a 141,000 square foot piece of land in Mukim Kuala Kuantan to a private firm.
Hasan was at the time the Pahang deputy menteri besar, he said.
Lee cited documents stating that in 2002, three years after his term as deputy MB ended, Hasan purchased the land for RM76,499.
“(But) the estimated value of the land based on the stamp duty office’s assessment notice is RM213,000.
“Hasan had bought the land for 61 percent below market value,” Lee said at a press conference in Sungai Besar today.
He added that in 2004, Hasan sold the land to an individual for RM397,683.
“The profit Hasan made with the sale was RM321,184... This is five times more than what he bought the land for.”
Lee said the land has since been developed, and is the site of a bungalow.
He claimed there was a conflict of interest in the deal as Hasan was in the Pahang government when the land was first sold.
He demanded that Hasan explain in 24 hours if he was in the Pahang exco meeting that approved the land sale, and if the land was actually Malay reserve land.
Malaysiakini has attempted to contact Hasan over these allegations, but the call was disconnected after the writer introduced himself as a Malaysiakini journalist.
Subsequent calls and WhatsApp messages have gone unanswered.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Tian Chua, who was also present, denied that the transaction was done on a willing buyer-willing seller basis, which was Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng's defence in his bungalow scandal.
“I would say it's quite different in nature... as a PAC chairperson your job is to ensure transparency.
“If you have a record of alleged abuse of power then that makes you highly questionable in terms of your position as PAC chairperson,” Tian said.- Mkini
