DAP did not ask for DPM post, says Guan Eng

Lim Guan Eng has denied that DAP requested for the deputy prime minister post if the opposition wins the next general election.
The DAP secretary-general was responding to a Berita Harian report, which quoted an Antarapos article in which Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as stating that DAP asked for the post.
The Antarapos article quoted the former premier, who is the chairperson of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), as telling an event at Yayasan Perdana last night that DAP never requested for the deputy prime minister's post.
However, Lim claimed that such discussions were never held.
“We have never talked about posts in governments,” the Penang chief minister told a press conference in Georgetown this afternoon.
“Let us remember that when we talk about race, it cannot resolve any problems. We have not discussed the DPM post nor talked about any cabinet posts,” he added.
Lim said DAP is consistent with its stand and supports the appointment of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister if Pakatan Harapan wins the coming general election, speculated to be held this year.
He said DAP would only contest in about 50 seats in the coming polls, and never made any claims to the DPM post.
'Umno stoking fear'
Training his guns on Umno, he accused the ruling party of using this issue to create fear in order to maintain its grip on power.
According to Antarapos, Mahathir had made the remark in response to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's claim that DAP would call the shots if the opposition captured federal power.
Mahathir had also accused Najib of using this issue to strike fear among the Malay electorate.
As to Mahathir being quoted as claiming that DAP requested for the deputy prime minister post , Lim said the former premier was entitled to his own opinion.
Asked if this meant Mahathir was lying, Lim replied: “I am not saying that.”
“Can the Berita Harian report be trusted? I have to see the report first before commenting further and I will discuss the matter with my party,” he added.
Speaking to voters in Kedah on Tuesday night, Najib had said that regardless of whether DAP has the top government post, the party would still call the shots if Harapan and Bersatu win the next election.
"Democracy and politics are a game of numbers. Who has the most seats, wins. Even if the top post of the government is not given to it, the party with the most seats will effectively rule,” he had said.
In the last general election, DAP won the second most number of seats in Parliament, after Umno.
Don't buck 'tradition'
In a related development, Cheras Umno division head Syed Ali Alhabshee said the report on DAP's purported ambitions was a major concern for the Malay community.
He said DAP has a track record of hurting the feelings of the Malay community while disrespecting the position of the Malays, the Malay language and the position of Islam in Malaysia.
"This is not a racial issue to stoke fear, but if someone from DAP becomes the deputy prime minister, I fear that it will have an effect on the future of the Malays," he said.

Syed Ali said that traditionally, only a Malay who is Muslim can be prime minister or deputy prime minister. Breaking "good traditions" may cause problems, he said.
"Although the position of deputy prime minister is not reserved for Malays, but this has been the tradition all this while which had allowed us to live in peace and harmony," he said.
In view of this, he urged Malay opposition supporters to be wary of DAP's purported ambitions which could destroy the tradition of Malay rule in Malaysia.- Mkini
