Dr M dismisses comeback as PM despite being ‘more popular’ than Anwar

Dr Mahathir Mohamad today dismissed the possibility of making a comeback as prime minister despite a survey showing that he was the most popular candidate in the opposition.
The survey, released by Institut Darul Ehsan last December, found Malays favouring Mahathir more than jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as candidate for prime minister.
Mahathir was dismissive when asked about the survey.
“No, no... I have said that I will not contest (in the general election),” said the 91-year-old Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson after launching the party’s song in Shah Alam today.
He added that the question of who will be the opposition's candidate for prime minister had never been discussed.
"It's more about winning (the election) or not.
"The question about the prime minister does not arise until we win," he said.
According to the survey, 29 percent of Malays want Mahathir as prime minister while Anwar and Hadi tied for the second spot, with both receiving 25 percent respectively.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin came in third among Malays at 13 percent, while DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang came in a distant fourth at one percent.
However, when all races were taken into account, Anwar was still the top candidate.
This was based on a survey of 1,761 respondents conducted from Aug 26 to early September.- Mkini
