PETALING JAYA: The Negeri Sembilan Health Department will investigate a claim that a popular kopitiam chain in Nilai served maggot-infested chilli sauce to one of its customers.
This came after a short clip of the incident went viral on Facebook.
State health director Dr Abdul Rahim Abdullah told FMT that his officers will work with the Nilai Municipal Council (MPN) enforcement department to verify the authenticity of the video.
“The Seremban Health Department is taking action,” he said in a WhatsApp message.
He said even though no official complaint was lodged with the health department or council, the department could still investigate the outlet.
A one-and-half-minute video, published on the “We Are Malaysian Indians” Facebook page, showed several maggots swimming in a plate of chilli sauce.
The customer, who zoomed in on the saucer, also recorded a brief exchange they had with the waiter who was sporting an OldTown White Coffee uniform.
The waiter could be heard telling the customer that recording the disgusting find was of no use.
The video has since been viewed over one million times and shared on Facebook more than 20,000 times.
Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, OldTown White Coffee said it was aware of the video on the social networking site and had launched an investigation into it.
“Our findings so far confirm that it is an isolated issue at our Giant Nilai branch.
“We are in direct and active communications with the complainant and are working to rectify this issue immediately.
“We would like to assure all our customers that our top priority is food quality; safety and hygiene and we are doing everything we can to rectify the issue.” -FMT
