The Sarawak government's move to send lawyers to London to study the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) shows a lack of confidence in the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), said jailed former PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
"It gives the impression that the (Sarawak) state government lacks confidence in the AGC to give a fair and free judgement," Anwar said in a statement today.
Last week Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg said the state would send a team of lawyers on a one-week London trip to search for and study any references related to the state's rights under MA63.
The MA63 provided for the joining of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (now known as Sabah) and Sarawak as the Federation of Malaysia. Singapore left the federation in 1965.
Anwar said the government should not take the move lightly as it could have serious implications on the relationship between Putrajaya, Sarawak and Sabah.
"I urge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to act immediately and to be open-hearted in studying the source of nervousness surrounding the MA63.
"It is clear that his and the BN government's actions in giving allocations and attention to the state had failed to control the situation," he said.
He also said that Najib's efforts to quell concerns that Putrajaya was neglecting Sarawak had also failed.
On a related matter, Anwar lauded the Sarawak's government's move to set up its own oil and gas exploration firm.
He said he had called for such a company since 2010, and wants Petronas to give the same leeway to Sabah, Terengganu and Kelantan.- Mkini
