Mahathir: I hope RoS will be fair

Former PM says the department was fair to PPBM, so it should be fair to everybody.
mahathir-RoSKUALA LUMPUR: Just moments after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) instructed DAP to hold a fresh election for its central executive committee (CEC), Dr Mahathir Mohamad pleaded with the department to be fair to his party’s Pakatan Harapan partner.
“I think they can do what they like, but I hope they, the RoS, will be fair.
“The RoS has been fair to us, they should be fair to everybody,” the PPBM chairman said.
The former prime minister was speaking to reporters when met at a function.
While several DAP leaders FMT contacted declined to comment, party supremo Lim Kit Siang labelled the RoS’ decision as “most ridiculous”.
The party’s legal bureau chairman Gobind Singh Deo said the party’s CEC would wait for an official letter from the RoS.
“The central executive committee will then meet and decide what to do thereafter,” he said.
The Puchong MP added that there were various options available to deal with the matter, but the best way was for DAP to study the RoS’ official letter first.
“I hope it will write to us soon to convey its decision.”
DAP national vice-chairman Teresa Kok claimed this was part of BN’s efforts to divert the attention of DAP leaders from “more important matters”.
“This is another dirty tactic by BN to try and get us to focus on a party election instead of the national politics and series of scandals that have been happening in the country,” she told FMT.
Meanwhile, Anthony Loke, the party’s national organising secretary, revealed that DAP would hold a meeting tomorrow.
Earlier this evening, the RoS instructed DAP to hold a fresh election for its CEC after it found that DAP’s earlier re-election, held on Sept 29, 2013, was not in accordance with the law.
This followed complaints made by DAP members who were dissatisfied with the party’s 2013 re-election.
In a statement today, RoS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah said in light of these complaints, “RoS believes the appointment of the CEC members as well as the main position holders through that re-election, is illegal”.
“The re-election should be based on the list of delegates entitled to attend and vote for DAP’s CEC elections dated December 15, 2012, involving 2576 delegates from 865 branches,” he said.
He added that the RoS considers DAP a legitimate party and has no intentions to de-register it so far.- FMT
