MAHATHIR’S STUNNING POPULARITY CREATES TRAFFIC JAMS IN PENANG : ‘DON’T BECOME PM SO YOU CAN STEAL MONEY TO BUY JEWELLERY FOR YOUR WIFE’ – EX PM DELIGHTS PENANGITES WITH SALVOS AT NAJIB, APANDI AT RAYA DINNER

PAKATAN Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad attracted thousands at Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) first state level open house in Penang tonight.
The traffic there on Jalan Burma was a bumper-to-bumper crawl as people made their way to the venue at the Long Say building. Fireworks lit the sky briefly when the former prime minister arrived about 8.20pm.
The crowd blocked the entrance as he approached the hall – each hoping to take photos of Dr Mahathir, pose selfies with him, and shake his hand. The Bersatu chairman received a standing ovation until he reached the VVIP table.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he was stuck in a 20-minute traffic jam just to get to the venue. He arrived a few minutes after Dr Mahathir.
“It has been a long time since we had a jam but it is good too. It means (Prime Minister) Najib Razak is also jammed,” he said in his speech at the event.
Dr Mahathir said he was pleased to see all races attend the open house, a sign that Bersatu was accepted by all races.
He told the people that PH, as a coalition, had meetings attended by all component parties.
“It shows that we intend to unite the opposition parties, ever since we launched Deklarasi Rakyat,” he said in his speech.
“Even though (DAP veteran leader Lim) Kit Siang and I are not good friends – we were enemies in fact – when it comes to the people’s declaration, we leaders come from different parties to support the movement.
“It was the first time I joined hands with Kit Siang. Many of my supporters were unhappy with me and my support dwindled.
“But now the graph is up again. There is no opposition against my cooperation with (PKR de facto leader) Anwar Ibrahim and Kit Siang. We have the same objective and that is to remove the ‘kerajaan penyangak’ (thieving government),” he said.
Dr Mahathir said PH would work hard in the coming polls and contest under a single logo and flag to remove the current administration.
He said he expected Najib to distribute money to voters, cheat and even find ways to prevent PH candidates from contesting in the next general election.
“He will threaten, use the government machinery. But if the people realise that their votes are for themselves, they will choose PH,” he said.
In his usual sharp and witty self, Dr Mahathir tickled the crowd with attacks directed at Najib, calling him a “penyangak” (thief).
He said Najib’s father, second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, served the country well but sadly his son believed he needed to give free money to the people to get support.
Dr Mahathir said PH was formed to take down Najib, which was what the people wanted, not to become prime minister themselves so they could steal money to buy jewellery for their wives.
“We also love our wives but we don’t do such things. The job of the government is to serve the people, especially now when the people are troubled by the rising cost of living, slashes in scholarships and fewer job opportunities for the people.
“We will correct this, heal the economy. We will do it, we have the experience in government,” he said.
Dr Mahathir also poked fun at Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali, whom he had accused of lying to protect Najib over the latter’s alleged wrongdoings related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
He said when questions were raised again about the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib’s account after the US Department of Justice (DoJ) alleged that the money came from 1MDB, Apandi denied it and said “ask Najib if you don’t believe”.
“And when everyone asked Najib, he denied. So this is the new law under Najib. Just ask the person accused of stealing or murder if he did it. When he denies that accusation, then okay, let him off,” he said.
Citing Apandi’s recent remarks that he feared no one but God, Dr Mahathir said he never wanted people to fear him, only to support him.
“I was shocked with his reply, and then Kit Siang quoted Quranic verses in relation to what he had said.
“Maybe Kit Siang can show the verse to Apandi. We don’t have to preach to Kit Siang, as it turns out he already reads the Quran,” he said.
Also with him in the DAP-led state were Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir, Kit Siang, Amanah vice-president Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, and scores of Penang Bersatu, DAP, PKR and Amanah leaders.
Penang Bersatu chief Marzuki Yahya said some 5,000 attended the open house.
