NAJIB DIDN’T CALL US TO LET IGP, SENIOR COPS OFF THE HOOK: UNDER NAJIB’S THUMB, MACC DENIES PROBE ON PROTECTION MONEY RACKET ‘OPS GOPI’ CALLED OFF ON HIS ORDERS

PETALING JAYA – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied a report in a website that investigations under Ops Gopi had been called off.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki said investigations against a few Malacca police officers “are still in progress” without interference from the “higher-ups”.
Whistleblower website Sarawak Report claimed that the MACC had been instructed to recommend “no further action” in relation to the investigations into the protection racket.
“Investigations are still ongoing. The allegation by SR (Sarawak Report) that my chief commissioner (Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad) and myself were called in by the Prime Minister is not true.
“We were never instructed to close the case. I denied that and it’s a total lie,” Azam Baki said in a WhatsApp reply to The Star on Tuesday.
Quoting sources, Sarawak Report alleged that Dzulkifli and Azam were summoned and told to halt investigations into the case.
Sources said anti-graft officers were working to get more details as part of the investigation and no time frame had been set to complete the probe.
“Such cases need more time as we need to be thorough,” said the source.
In May, several high-ranking police officers in Melaka were rounded up for allegedly giving protection to illegal gambling dens and massage parlours in the state.
