Dr Mahathir Mohamad continues to lob sarcasm at Prime Minister Abdul Razak over the latter's pledge to help strengthen the United States economy.
“Malaysia is now recognised as a great investor to restore the economy and infrastructure of developed countries. Najib is to be congratulated for this distinction,” he said in a blog post.
The former premier noted how among others Najib offered US President Donald Trump more than US$10 billion to purchase 58 Boeing aircraft.
Apart from this, he said Malaysia would be investing more than US$3 billion of EPF's money in infrastructure development in the US, on top of some US$7 billion already invested in equity.
“There are also other offers to help maintain Trump's United States of America as a developed country.
“The workers of Malaysia will no doubt support Najib's use of their pension money to enrich the already rich US. I am sure they don't mind losing their money in this generous gesture,” he added.
Mahathir said while the government has the right to take this money as it pleases, the question is whether it is a loan.
“Workers may want to know the terms of the loan. The government's management of 1MDB does not convince people it is skilled at managing money. If it fails to make profits how will it repay the loan to the workers of Malaysia?
“At the moment, the government does not seem to have money. Malaysia Airlines is also not the most profitable airline company in the world. The question is, will we be seeing the US$10 billion again or will it disappear like 1MDB money?” he asked.
In an exclusive interview with Malaysiakini yesterday, Mahathir had laughed when asked to comment on Najib's pledge to strengthen the US economy.
He said this was the first time a “third world” nation has made such a promise to a superpower, which is capable of helping itself.
Reiterating this in his blog post, Mahathir said: “The visit by Malaysia's prime minister to Washington to offer help to Malaysia's richest friend will go down in history as the best example of how the poor can help the rich.” - Mkini
