Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has rubbished claims that he hijacked an Umno Youth protest on Friday outside the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
Syed Saddiq, who turned up at the gathering to protest the US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, said he only wanted to stand in solidarity with other Malaysians to express their disapproval at the decision.
"With regard to (Sungai Besar Umno chief) Jamal Md Yunos' statement that I tried to gain popularity from Umno Youth's (event), I strongly deny this.
"Regardless of who wants to take credit for the organising of the programme, my intention was only to stand in solidarity with Malaysians on the issue of Palestine," he said.
Jerusalem is being contested by both Israel and Palestine.
Yesterday, Jamal accused Syed Saddiq of riding on Umno Youth's coattails after he turned up at the gathering outside the US embassy.
Syed Saddiq said he had met with US ambassador Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir today to convey his views about the matter.
He added that Lakhdhir had expressed her hopes that the issue would not escalate into violence.- Mkini
