Azalina: Anti-fake news committee to consult all MPs

Members of Parliament, including from the opposition, will be consulted during the stakeholders stage by the anti-fake news special committee, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said.
“As I’ve mentioned before, we will meet with all stakeholders including members of Parliament. (From) the opposition, the government, no problem.
“But if they (the opposition) want to discuss or want to know the developments, they should not have bad intentions,” she said at a press conference today.
Azalina said this after attending a signing ceremony between the Malaysian government and the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation in Kuala Lumpur.
She was responding Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang’s criticisms against the special committee set up to look into legal measures to curb the spread of fake news.
“Gelang Patah, before there was even anything, has accused the government of bad intentions, of wanting to arrest the opposition.
“If that’s how it is, then never mind,” she said, adding the opposition disagrees with everything the government does.
“But they (the opposition) are victims of fake news too. When they become victims of fake news, they are angry at the government.
“We are trying to look for solutions,” Azalina said.

She also said the special committee will engage with media representatives as stakeholders.
When asked whether existing laws were insufficient to address the fake news issue, she said there are gaps that should be filled.
One of the challenges with existing laws, she said, was that there were “levels of nuisance” when it came to fake news.
“There are some things which are just naughty, mischievous things. But there are also those who intentionally want to sow hatred.
“The laws are there but we want to improve the situation,” she said.
She revealed she had just attended the second technical meeting of the special committee but she could not reveal further information.- Mkini
