Civil servant among 28 nabbed for extortion under ‘Ops Pau’

A civil servant was among 28 people arrested in a special operation to eradicate vagrants and extortionists conducted by police teams from the Kuala Terengganu police headquarters yesterday.
Kuala Terengganu police deputy chief, Suffian Sulaiman said ‘Ops Pau’ was conducted in three locations, namely the Kuala Terengganu District Council Bus Station (MBKT), Kuala Terengganu Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) and around the Grand Puteri Hotel.
According to Suffian, the 43-year-old civil servant was detained with his accomplice, with two small packets believed to contain syabu (methamphetamine) in his trouser pocket.
“The civil servant who was married with three children also tested positive for syabu.
“This operation was carried out after receiving information from the state government and monitoring Facebook on extortion activities (pau) by vagrants and drug addicts around the operation area which is frequented by the public.
“Three teams comprising eight officers and 60 personnel were immediately deployed to raid and clean up the area from the elements scaring the people,” he told reporters yesterday.
According to him, police also arrested a married couple and two friends who had just finished taking drugs in a hut, as well as an old man wanted in connection with a bank fraudulent money transaction case.
“Anyone with information on extortion activities in public places can come forward and lodge reports at the nearest police station to enable immediate action to be taken,” he said. - Mkini
