KU LI: EXCUSE ME, IT’S MY MEN & WOMEN WHO WON – NOT ZAHID’S

KUANTAN — The new lineup of Umno wing leaders who were elected at the party delegates meeting yesterday is capable of bringing new breath to the 72-year-old Umno, said the party presidential candidate, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Although their names had yet to be officially announced, Tengku Razaleigh said he was happy that all the candidates he supported won in the contest.
“Those who won are the candidates that we support. InsyaAllah (God willing), this will give new breath to the party,” he said.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was reported to have won the party’s Youth leadership post. He defeated seven other contestants.
For the party’s Puteri wing, the leadership post was won by its incumbent vice-chief, Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan. -— Bernama

Mother of all democracies, Zahid says of Umno polls

THE Umno elections have shown that the party practises “the mother of all democracies”, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, referring to the decision to allow all members to contest.
The acting president said 165,000 delegates voted for their division heads, and Puteri, Wanita and Youth leaders.
The former deputy prime minister said this is the kind of rejuvenation needed by Umno to move forward, following its crushing defeat in the 14th general election.
“This shows that Umno is more open, democratic and inclusive… 165,000 delegates made their choice.
Zahid, who is also Bagan Datuk MP, reiterated that Umno must remain relevant so as to champion Malay and Bumiputera issues after the change in government.
Yesterday, he said 73 out of 191 Umno division chiefs had won the party polls uncontested, and that the number showed that Umno practised democracy.
Based on unofficial results, Umno Supreme Council member Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has won the Youth chief post.
Incumbent Puteri vice-chief Zahida Zarik Khan, meanwhile, has secured the wing’s top post.
