Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran has clarified that reported ruling requiring restaurants to only hire local cooks was just a proposal, and that no definitive decisions have been made.
Speaking to The Malaysian Insight, Kulasegaran said the ministry still needed to discuss the proposal with those in the industry.
“There is no decision yet. We need to discuss with all the stakeholders,” he was quoted saying today.
The minister came under fire following a media report yesterday that quoted him as saying all restaurants would be required to start hiring local chefs and cooks from July 1 this year, and that they would have until year-end to ensure compliance.
On the matter of whether the ruling would encompass all restaurants if enacted, he said it would only be meant for local eateries.
As he told TMI, “You can’t have a French restaurant hiring local guys, it obviously needs to employ people who are well-versed in the cuisine."
However, Kulasegaran said local eateries also included hawker stalls and Indian-Muslim restaurants and coffee shops.
The proposal, he added, was in line with Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto to reduce the country's dependence on foreign labour.
The minister had previously said the new government wished to prioritise jobs for Malaysians, but would allow foreign workers where the necessity arises. - Mkini
