MRT Corp to cut cost of Serdang-Putrajaya line construction

Its CEO says he discussed ways to cut construction cost and save public money with the Council of Eminent Persons today.
MRT Corp CEO Shahril Mokhtar speaks to reporters after meeting the Council of Eminent Persons to discuss ways to reduce the construction costs of the MRT Serdang-Putrajaya line.
KUALA LUMPUR: MRT Corp today said it is looking at ways to reduce the cost of construction of the MRT Serdang-Putrajaya route.
Its CEO Shahril Mokhtar said the company brought up the matter during its meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons.
“We had a good discussion today. And for MRT, we are trying our best to reduce costs further and save the people’s money,” he said to reporters.
The ongoing construction of the MRT Serdang-Putrajaya line is expected to be completed in 2022. The Serdang route is an extension of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang line. The MRT2 is budgeted to cost RM32 billion.
MRT Corp previously said it had awarded RM1.23 billion in tenders for the project.
Former prime minister Najib Razak said the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya line would benefit two million residents living along the 52.2km route.
It is expected to shuttle some 529,000 MRT users on a daily basis.
However the MRT Line 3 project was cancelled by the Pakatan Harapan government to cut costs in efforts to manage the RM1 trillion national debt.
The MRT Line 3 project, also called the Klang Valley Circle Line, aimed to connect with the existing Sungai Buloh-Kajang line and Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya line as well as other light rail transit and monorail systems. -FMT
