The NFC scandal made headlines when the Auditor-General’s 2010 report highlighted the failure of NFCorp’s centre to meet the annual beef production target set by the Government.
The target for NFCorp was to breed 8,000 heads of cattle that year but the RM74mil centre in Gemas had bred 3,289 heads of cattle, or 41% of the target.
Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamad was also reported as saying that a PAC report was submitted to the Dewan secretariat with several recommendations for the authorities.
Since then, the public-funded firm has been repeatedly accused by opposition parties (then) of using government soft loans for purposes unrelated to cattle farming, including the purchase of luxury condominium units in Bangsar and Singapore and land in Putrajaya.
The issue was highly publicised when it was revealed that NFCorp was run by the husband and three children of former Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
PKR demanded that Shahrizat explain claims of alleged financial mismanagement and corruption in NFCorp.
The former Lembah Pantai MP resigned from her cabinet post in April 2012 and was quoted as saying that she had nothing to do with NFC and she “just happened to be married to the (NFCorp) chairman”.
On Jan 20, 2012, Shahrizat, who was later appointed as special adviser to the Prime Minister on women’s affairs, filed a RM100mil suit against PKR leaders Rafizi Ramli and Zuraida Kamaruddin for defamation in connection with the NFCorp issue.
On March 12, 2012, Shahrizat’s husband, NFCorp executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail claimed trial to two counts of CBT involving some RM49.7mil with regards to the purchase of two condominium units.
Dr Mohamad Salleh was also charged with violating the Companies Act by utilising company’s assets to partially fund the purchase of the condominiums without approval.
The time is perfect to look into this scandal and charge everyone involved.
The Whistleblowers, Rafizi Ramli and and a few others must be acquitted of any offence since they had highlighted the scandal to the public, even if they had violated any financial services laws.
Will the AG proceed to re-investigate this NFC or Cow-Gate affair and charge everyone involved?
