PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad says MACC must act against those suspected of living beyond their means, even when they are in positions of power.
PETALING JAYA: PAS has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate those living beyond their means and not wait till they are no longer in power.
The Islamist party’s vice-president, Idris Ahmad, said this when commenting on reports of cash, jewellery and luxury items, valued at around RM1 billion, seized by the authorities as part of their probe on 1MDB.
“How was such wealth amassed? Salary, savings, inheritance?
“This is why we hope MACC will act against those suspected of living beyond their means even if they are in power.
“Don’t wait for the cancer to reach the final stage before acting,” he said in a statement, adding it was the people who suffered from such corruption.
Idris, who is former Bukit Gantang MP, said anyone suspected to be involved in corrupt practices should be arrested, “regardless of whether they have power or not”.
“No one is above the law.
“We don’t want a situation where when they have power, all is all right and no action is taken.”
Earlier today, Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Amar Singh revealed that cash and luxury items with an estimated value of between RM900 million and RM1.1 billion were seized last month from premises linked to former prime minister Najib Razak.
They included RM116.7 million in cash, 12,000 items of jewellery, including rings and diamond earrings, estimated to cost RM440 million without taking into consideration the cost of workmanship, 576 luxury handbags, 423 watches worth RM78 million and 234 pairs of sunglasses worth RM374,000. -FMT
